What To Do This Weekend

Well Folks, today is International Women's Day*! Women's Day has been observed in many countries across the globe (albeit, not necessarily on the same day) since the early 1900's (the first was Feb 28, 1909 in the US). March 8th was set as International Women's Day by the UN in 1977, which was the Year of the Woman. The focus of the day ranges from culture to culture, but, in general it is a celebration of women's economic, political and social achievements, as well as a day to recognize and encourage respect, appreciation and love towards women.

In celebration of the day, there is an International Women’s Day fair today from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. at The Landing, at MUN. There will be booth displays, local multicultural female artisans and crafters, and a celebration of Aboriginal Canadian women. And, on Saturday, from 10 AM - 5 PM, The Multicultural Women’s Organization of Newfoundland and Labrador will hold an International Food and Craft Fair at the Holiday Inn. This will feature multicultural performances and international fashion shows. Admission is $5 for adults, free for children 10 years and under.
