Recall - children's books titled "Count my kisses, 1, 2, 3" and "red, green, blue, I love you"

The following recall notice is from HSW:

Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report of a recall involving children's books titled "Count my kisses, 1, 2, 3" and "red, green, blue, I love you".

A metal rod holding small beads on the cover of the books can detach and release small parts that present a choking hazard. A detached metal bar can expose a sharp edge posing a laceration hazard.

See HSW Products tab for specifics on the affected items (including additional photos).

The recalled books were sold at Barnes & Noble, online at Amazon.com and by other booksellers and retailers from June 2013 to August 2013 in Canada and the United States.

Corrective Action:

Consumers should take the recalled books away from children immediately and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

For more information, consumers may contact Hachette Book Group, Inc. by telephone at 1-888-965-5802 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, or visit the firm’s website.

What To Do This Weekend - Doors Open

Uggghhhh..... School ....  :-S

I hope you are all getting back into the swing of the school year.... we are trying to adjust! I much prefer the late nights and lazy mornings of summer and I miss the children tons now that they are back! My attempts at developing a routine thus far seem to be in vain - I have spent the last two days running about. So, that is back on the agenda for next week ;-) One routine I am hoping will stick: posting What to Do this Weekend on a weekly basis again now that the summer break is over....that is the goal at least ;-)

This weekend brings Doors Open St. John's when several establishments throughout the City open their doors, free of charge, to visitors. It is a great opportunity to explore that place you have always wanted to see, like The Basilica, Clovelly Stables, the Central Fire Station and many more! See the website for more details and a complete list of participating establishments!

Also this weekend we have the Family Fun Extravaganza - Big & Small at the Jack Byrne arena. This promises to be fun for he young ones: Big & Small award winning family singer Markus is performing; , Douglas John and Oucho the Monkey from Ants In Your Pants will be there AND after the show kids will have the opportunity to meet Howie from Almost Naked Animals! You need tickets in advance (see link).

There are many other fun family activities on around town! See below for a snapshot (full details can be found in the calendar). And, summer may be drawing to a close, but I will point out that there are still many playdates and playgroups for pre-schoolers and their caregivers! Why not check out the Family and Child Care Connections drop-in playgroups; Active Start program at the NL Sports Plex; St. John's Kid Hava Java Playdate or the Playdate in the Park with Oh The Joys of Discovery Toys? They offer great opportunities for your younger children to socialize :-)

Have a great weekend!

Recall - Monster Science and Super Star Science Colossal Water Balls (Water-absorbing Polymer Balls) marketed by Be Amazing

The following recall notice is from HSWRecalled Monster Science and Super Star Science Colossal Water Balls (Water-absorbing Polymer Balls) marketed by Be Amazing! Toys pose a serious health hazard to young children
Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report of a recall involving Monster Science and Super Star Science Colossal Water Balls (Water-absorbing Polymer Balls) marketed by Be Amazing! Toys.

When the marble-sized toy is ingested, it expands inside the body and causes a blockage in the small intestine, resulting in severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration and could be life threatening. The toys do not show up on an X-ray and may require surgery to be removed from the body.

See Products tab for specifics on the affected item (including additional photos).

The soft and colourful product can be easily mistaken by a child for candy. The Consumer Product Safety Commission in the United States is aware of one incident with a similar water-absorbing polymer ball product in which an 8-month-old ingested a polymer ball and it had to be surgically removed.

The recalled products were sold at various retailers and websites from September 2010 to November 2012. (Canadian distributor may have been distributing up to the present).

Corrective Action:Consumers should take this recalled product away from children immediately and contact Be Amazing! Toys for a refund.
Consumers may contact Be Amazing! Toys toll-free at 1-877-798-9795 or direct 1-301-895-4531, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or visit the company online at www.beamazingtoys.com, and then click on "Safety Recall" at the bottom of the page for more information.
Please note that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold or even given away in Canada.
Health Canada would like to remind Canadians to report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product or any other consumer product or cosmetic by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
