What To Do This Weekend - Have some Earth Hour and April Fool's Fun!

OK folks... this is a MEGA weekend! 2 very important events just happen to fall on this Saturday and Sunday: Earth Hour is March 31st at 8:30 pm, and Sunday is April Fools!!!!

I know! Exciting, right??

All right, all right, let's all calm down and think: what are we going to do?

Earth Hour.... I LOVE Earth Hour! We celebrate every year and it is SO much fun! For some of my ideas, check out this post from last year. My favourite thing to do is to play hide and seek with the kids in the dark - the thrill they get from being half spooked in the dark adds to the fun ;-) And it makes it so much harder.... I was able to hide under the kitchen table undetected for a good 10 minutes last year - that would never happen if there was light! I think another fun thing to do would be to play some sort of glow-in-the-dark game... I know: have a dance party! Put on glow in the dark bracelets and necklaces, haul out the tambourines, drums and guitars, make wonderful music and  dance the night away! Or make an indoor campfire with a grouping of candles on your kitchen table and tell ghost stories....

source
April Fools.... ah! another fun day with the kids :-) Of course, the trick with April Fool's is actually being able to trick the kids from one year to the next....they catch on to stuff ya know ;-) Here are some ideas from last year's post. In the meantime, I'm leaning towards one of these ideas:
  • switching their clothes from one dresser to another (they share a room) - how long will it take them to find their clothes?
  • switch out the dry cereal with pasta.... I can't wait to see their faces when they pour out macaroni instead of Cheerios ;-)
  • there is no way I am going to do the classic "saran wrap on the toilet" trick - that just sounds like a major mess for this Mama! But here is my version of it: I am going to saran wrap their bedroom door (from the outside). Ha ha! The first groggy kid that goes to the washroom is gonna have to fight his way out ;-)

Now, as if the weekend wasn't already jam packed with Earth Hour and April Fool's goodness.... here are some things to do around town this weekend as well:
  • Topsail United Church will be hosting a Breakfast with the Easter Bunny Saturday from 8-11 a.m. There will be face painting and colouring for the children. Details in the calendar ;-)
  • If that is a tad too early, no need to miss out on the fun: Join the folks at  Holy Innocents Church for Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, Saturday morning from 8:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. In addition to the breakfast of pancakes and sausages, there will be face painting, games & prizes, a nail polish booth and the opportunity for pictures with the Easter Bunny!
  • There is an Easter Handmade Craft Market Saturday from 10-4 at Hotel Mt. Pearl (Park Ave) - stock up on Easter treats and support local crafters!
  • This weekend marks the start of a new theme for the Fluvarium's Kid's Club Program: April Showers will show children how water is all around us and how every plant and animal on earth depends on clean water. Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. from March 31-April 29.
  • The Rooms gets in on the April Fool's fun with their theme of Jokes on You! for this week's Family Fun session at 2 on Sunday. Children will join in the fun of fools and make some great gags - with everything from silly slime to funny disguises, you know they'll be laughing ;-).

Have a good one!

Ecoblogical

Folks who visit the blog regularly may have already noticed, but for those of you who don't (Gasp! the horror! Do such people even exist? ;-), I wanted to point out a new Mommy-blogger in town: Ecoblogical.

As she states in her Profile:

I am an environmentally aware individual working hard to make a lighter carbon footprint by not contributing unnecessary damage to the Earth. It is my goal to inform others that it is never too late to make changes and help begin to restore our planets health - and leave our children and their children a healthier planet to live on.

Now, doesn't that sound like a good goal for us all?

And oh, she just happens to have good taste in her reading matter as well - she linked to yours truly in a post yesterday ;-)

Check her out!

Easter Count Down - Things to Fill a Basket... Besides Candy!

Well, here we are again... a few days away from Easter! I'm trying to pack a basket that is not 100% junk (candy or dollar-store-find kind).... so what to include?? Here are my ideas so far:

    • Sugar-free Gum - try the new multi-flavoured kinds
    • Spring & Easter themed cookie cutters (Bulk Barn; Walmart)
    • make Rice Crispy cookies and put inside plastic eggs lined with Saran Wrap before they are set... they will take on the egg shape ;-) Or you could just cut them out with Egg shaped cookie cutters and place in a baggie...
  • Books
    • classics like Benjamin Bunny/Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter
    • Bunnicula by James Howe for the older kids (oldie but goodie ;-)
    • anything from one of the following series: Bad Kitty; Rainbow Magic; Flat Stanley; Captain UnderPants; Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Big Nate

Thesis on Early Childhood Memory in Women - Do You Want To Participate?

I was sent the following from a Master's student at MUN, Katie. She is looking for subjects for a study on early childhood memory in women. If that is you, or if you know of anybody who may be interested, please contact her at k.brandeau@yahoo.ca for the complete details and consent form.

Hi there!

My name is Katie Brandeau, I was put onto your site by my supervisor, Dr. Carole Peterson. I'm a Masters student doing my degree in developmental psychology and my thesis on early childhood memory in women and was wondering if it would be possible for you to do me a favour?

For my thesis, I need to interview moms in three different categories:

- Pregnant for the first time
- Not pregnant and have a 2-5 year old child
- Pregnant and also have a 2-5 year old child

The interview lasts about half an hour over the phone and in the end all of the participants are entered into a draw for a $100 gift card.

So, I come to the favour. I was wondering if there was any way for you to advertise this on your blog some way? I can't really think of a better way to reach the moms in St. John's. I've attached a longer information sheet/consent form for your information.

Thanks for you consideration, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Tasty Tuesday - A Raisin Bread Adventure!

So, as part of my little Countdown to Easter, I wanted to share a fun brunch idea with you - something tasty you could make with the kids on Good Friday or Easter Sunday AM....

But, before I get to that... a story.

Recently, I was given a sample of Sun-Maid Raisin Cinnamon Swirl bread. Yes, it was yummy (DH even ate it for dessert!), but that is not the be-all-n'-end-all of this tale....

OK...

You see, the bread was so good, we knew we were going to get more. And, we were going to get that first loaf with the "full value" coupons we had also received! Oh! the excitement! They were placed with care on the shelf above the counter, right next to the pantry (yes, this detail will matter).

Then, one day last week, remembering the recipe attached to the coupons, I picked up the parcel. As I grabbed the waffle toast recipe, a terrible, terrible thing happened: the coupons slid out of my hand and magically aligned with the crack between the counter top and the wall, and they fell in!

They were.... gone!

For a moment, I will not kid you, I was shell shocked. Yes, over raisin bread coupons. I stared at the space in the wall, stupefied.

Once I got my wits about me again, I grabbed a knife, and wiggled it down the crack, hoping to grab onto them and slide them up. No luck. I found a small gap near the base of the cupboard and tried the knife there, same thing. Then, thinking of the little paper clip that held them together, I put a magnet on a string (not just any magnet - DH's favourite bottle opener magnet), lowered it down through an opening I had found on the inside of the cupboard (up near the top where the counter met the base unit), wiggled it around, thought I heard something click, pulled it up, hoping to see the glorious free-bread coupons.... and snapped the damn ... darn string, loosing everything!

Somewhere around this point, I got all Scarlett O'Hara and figured I would think about it again tomorrow. But, wouldn't ya know, DH noticed the recipe on the counter and asked: "Where are those coupons anyway?"

Oh, the dilemma I was faced with! Do I say "don't know" or "in my bag" or confess the entire awful truth??

I chose the morally correct option, and I even admitted the bottle opener fiasco up front too. He said "Are you serious?".

Now, if you ever wonder if a man and his wife are well matched pair, hear this: DH did not tell me I was cracked for spending my afternoon pondering how to rescue the coupons, no siree, he dived right in and started going through various "have you tried's"... he checked the base of the cupboards, and the other side of the wall (which was inside our pantry). DH figured that removing the baseboard in the pantry was the next thing to try because it was pretty much hidden from view. And yes, after supper he did remove it... only to find that the paneling and baseboards there are all perfectly finished and there is no "space" like we were hoping for that would allow us to retrieve the coupons (and magnet).

So, we went to bed discouraged and dreaming of raisin bread coupons... and yes, our bottle-opener-souvenir magnet...

A few days passed, the coupons still on our minds...

Then Saturday AM, after breakfast, I noticed DH was puttering over by the pantry, and longer than it usually takes him to sneak a few of "his" cookies. I went over to find him with a flashlight and crowbar, trying to pry back the baseboard of the cupboard. "I can see the reflection of the magnet", he said. "It's right there, and I think the coupons are still right next to it!"

Oh! The excitement we had!

"Get a pair of tweezers", I said. The normal pair proved to be too short to reach and grab the magnet, so DH went to find a longer pair he had in a tool box somewhere. Well, I wasn't going to just stay there crouched on the floor and do nothing while the coupons lay there, a foot a way from me awaiting their rescue! I grabbed the crowbar and went at the baseboard. Man, it was on there good! I used so much pressure I slid up to the cupboards....

Then finally ... "pop" ...the baseboard flew off and hit the wall, attracting the boys' attention. One of them came over and asked, all Isabella like, "Whatcha doin'?".  DH came back with the tweezers, but they didn't work. We were desperate now. So close! He scoured through the kitchen drawers randomly suggesting various instruments. Finally, he held up a big salad serving spoon and asked me if it might help. "Yes, I think it might, the way it curves", I said... I slid it in, then pressed it along the board where the coupons were and ...   Hallelujah! They were all rescued when I pulled the spoon back out!

At this point I looked up at the boy who was still waiting patiently to have his question answered and said: "Getting bread coupons"...he looked at his father and then back to me and we all burst out laughing...yes, we busted the house for bread coupons...... But Sun-Maid Raisin Cinnamon Swirl bread IS THAT good! :-)

And now, lovely readers, if you are still with me (and hey, no hard feelings if you now think I am cracked - I've known for years ;-).... here is the fabulous recipe I wanted to share with you for your Easter brunch:

source: Sun-Maid
Sun-Maid Raisin Waffle Toast

Ingredients:
3 eggs
3 tbsp milk
2 tbsp packed brown sugar
1/4 tsp vanilla
6 -8 slices Sun-Maid Raisin Cinnamon Swirl Bread
1 tbsp butter

Method:
  • Heat traditional style waffle iron.
  • Whisk together eggs, milk, sugar and vanilla in a shallow dish.
  • Dip raisin bread in egg mixture one slice at a time.
  • Place in waffle iron, close and grill until golden and baked through, about 3 min. If you don't have a waffle iron, place soaked bread in lightly greased skillet over medium heat for about 3 min each side until golden and cooked through.
  • Makes 6-8 waffle toasts. Serve with fruit and cream or syrup to taste!

How the kids can help:
measure and pour ingredients, whisk together the first 4 ingredients, dip bread in egg mixture, plate food and decorate with fruit (make an Easter bunny - almond teeth, strawberry nose, kiwi eyes and cantaloupe ears :-)

Enjoy!

Disclosure: I received the above mentioned products for free. As always, the opinions stated are my own and were not influenced by the items received.

What To Do This Weekend - Take in a Top Broadway Performance ... Right Here!

Well, folks - it is here!! Oh!Thursday, how I love thee!

Really, it IS one of my favourite days... what with the anticipation of the weekend and all ;-)

And this weekend, there are a couple of things to look forward to:

source
  • Tonight is the opening night of GODSPELL at Gower Street United! GODSPELL is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time, and is brought to NL by  Etcetera Productions (who also brought Seussical and Cats to our stages). The performance is based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew, features a sparkling score and many well-loved songs, and draws upon a variety of theatrical traditions to reflect on the life of Jesus and on the universal messages of kindness, tolerance and love. Now through the 25th (tickets at Holy Heart Theatre).
  • On Saturday, welcome the Easter Bunny to town! Amazingly, he will be at both the Village and the Avalon Mall daily starting this Saturday! That is some crazy scheduling - must be practice for all the hopping he'll do at Easter ;-). Also on Saturday, head to the SPCA Flea Market at St.David's Church. This first market of 2012 will include housewares, pet goodies, collectibles, books and more...$1 at the door and all proceeds go to the SPCA :-)
  • The theme for this week's Family Fun program at The Rooms is Sports for all Seasons - Children will have fun while designing and creating sports memorabilia in honour of their favourite sport or team. GO TEAM!
  • Fluvarium Kid's Club Program (theme this month: Wake Up); St. John's Kids Hava Java Playdate and Build a Brick Program continue per regular schedules as well!

And, a heads up.... next weekend there is a Breakfast with the Easter Bunny (Saturday AM); Earth Hour (31st at 8:30) and a new theme will be introduced to the Fluvarium Kid's Club Program!

    What I Tried: A Glad® Product Reveiw

Have you seen the Glad® To Go Lunch containers? You know, the ones with the little mini "dressing" cups that snap into the lid (I know, that intrigued me too!). Well, I recently received a set from the manufacturer as part of a campaign and  figured I would share my thoughts with you :-)

    • I felt the containers were too big for my kids' lunches (the main container has a 4-cup capacity), BUT, they are perfect for an adult sized salad - especially with the little salad dressing container that snaps into the lid! I put some shredded cheese in the mini cup - keeps it from getting soggy with the rest of the salad (I rarely use dressing myself).
    • Speaking of cheese....if you use the Glad® To Go Lunch container to store leftover chili (or take it for lunch), not only does it hold a generous serving, but the "dressing" cup keeps the perfect portion of shredded cheese or sour cream at the ready and separated until you have the chili heated (the containers are microwaveable and BPA free).
    • AND, my favourite discovery: the mini cups fit in most other GladWare® containers.... so, I was able to use them with the square sandwich sized GladWare® to give the boys carrot & celery sticks, and cauliflower & broccoli plus some dressing for dip - yay! - an easy and convenient start to a healthy lunch! Woot!

Disclosure: I received the above mentioned products for free. As always, the opinions stated are my own and were not influenced by the items received. Also, in general, I do prefer to stay away from plastics - but given that they are non-breakable and re-usable, I do continue to use the occasional BPA-free plastics, such as those mentioned here ;-)

    Marvelous Monday - Sting Ray

I thought when I was making this, that it was a manta ray:

Mario took one look at it and informed me that no, this was a sting ray. My bad.

Thankfully, he was ok with that and is enjoying it anyways! You can find the pattern here.

    Have a marvelous week!

    Report Card Week in NL

Well, folks - it is that time of year again: Report Cards!

Most schools in the Eastern Avalon are getting their reports this week. We got ours yesterday (and, I have to say, this is one pRoUd Mama right here!)....

Anyhow, I thought it would be timely to share this link with you from Busy Kids = Happy MomTop 10 Conference Tips for Parents
source: Busy Kids = Happy Mom
For me, I always make sure I take the time to review the report card away from* the children, and note what my areas of concern are/ what questions I want to ask. How can I help my child succeed to the best of their abilities while instilling a love of learning? is usually my #1 question. I want to aid in their success, but don't want them so stressed they get turned off school, homework or learning. The teachers always have great ideas...

Happy report card week / teacher conferences!

*When I am with the children, my first high-fives are always for that stuff in the lower right hand corner :-). My primary focus is the comments on respectful conduct, positive attitude, etc. and their grades are secondary - I want them to know I am proud of their character as much - or more- than I am of their marks! We do discuss their grades and their needs recommendations with the message that when you do your best, all things fall in to place. ;-)

    Easter Camp Updates

Several new venues for Easter Camps have been added to the page, including a few options for the harder to place kindergarten/5 yr old crowd :-)

    Easter Camp 2012 Page

    Sunday Snippets

Tidbits of information I picked up this week:

    What To Do This Weekend

Well Folks, today is International Women's Day*! Women's Day has been observed in many countries across the globe (albeit, not necessarily on the same day) since the early 1900's (the first was Feb 28, 1909 in the US). March 8th was set as International Women's Day by the UN in 1977, which was the Year of the Woman. The focus of the day ranges from culture to culture, but, in general it is a celebration of women's economic, political and social achievements, as well as a day to recognize and encourage respect, appreciation and love towards women.

    The countdown in ON!

    Books on the Brain

I have books on the brain this week: I have made several recent visits to Chapters, have been pouring over the current issues of the Scholastic flyers (it doesn't help that they are online ;-), and am all geared up for the upcoming Bookfairs at the schools! Which got me to thinking....Have you discovered www.bookcloseouts.ca yet?

Now, like the name suggests, they specialize in recently discontinued and overstocked books, so you won't find every title there. What you will find is a wide range of titles covering a vast span of categories. And even with the shipping fees, when I do price comparison for books I can still get online at Amazon or Indigo (the bigger companies still have some of bookcloseouts titles at "list" prices, but I have also found books there that I can't get anywhere else!), Bookcloseouts still comes out a clear winner.

One word of caution, though: if it is for a gift, I'd avoid the "scratch & dent" sale copies. These are clearly marked in the description and are copies with a mark on the cover, a rip on the pages or dusty pages. Everything else is good to go though - I have placed several orders now and have been pleased with every single one!

Here are some children's titles you'll currently find on Bookcloseouts.ca:

    Find it here.

Big Nate is popular in the gr 3-5 set right now:

    Enjoy!

Safety Advisory from Health Canada on Arm & Hammer and Crest "Spinbrush" brands powered toothbrushes

The following safety advisory is from HSW: includes safety tips for electronic toothbrushes.

Event Update: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Health Canada are advising Canadians of new safety information associated with the use of Arm & Hammer and Crest "Spinbrush" brands powered toothbrushes manufactured by Church & Dwight Co., Inc.

When using your electric toothbrush, you don’t expect parts of the device to pop off and chip your tooth, fly into your eyes or get stuck in your throat. But that’s exactly what has happened to some users of the battery-powered Arm & Hammer Spinbrush - or the Crest Spinbrush, as it was called before 2009.

See Product Details tab for specifics on the affected items. (updated product list)

“It’s important that consumers know how to avoid the risks associated with using the Spinbrush,” says Shumaya Ali, M.P.H., a consumer safety officer at the Food and Drug Administration. “We’ve had reports in which parts of the toothbrush broke off during use and were released into the mouth with great speed, causing broken teeth and presenting a choking hazard.”
Safety precautions should be taken with all kinds of electric toothbrushes.
“Electric toothbrushes can be very effective in removing dental plaque, and so they can help prevent dental decay and gum disease,” says Susan Runner, D.D.S., chief of FDA’s dental devices branch. “At the same time, it’s important to supervise children when they use these brushes, and to look out for any malfunctions of the toothbrush that might cause an injury.”
Injuries reported from using the Spinbrush powered toothbrush include:
    •chipped or broken teeth
•cuts to the mouth and gums
•swallowing and choking on broken pieces
•injury to the face and eyes

Parts Popping OffThe Spinbrush handle contains batteries and a motor that operates the brushes, which are attached to a brush head. In the models of Spinbrush made for adults, the brush head is removable and can be replaced.
But the brush head should not pop off during normal use, says Ali. “In some cases, the brush head popped off to expose metal pieces underneath that can - and have - poked individuals in the cheek and areas near the eyes, causing  injuries.”
The “Spinbrush for Kids” models, which have different handle designs, such as Spiderman and Thomas & Friends, do not have removable brush heads.  Nonetheless, problems with the Spinbrush for Kids have also been reported, such as cut lips, burns from the batteries, and bristles falling off and lodging in a child’s tonsils.
“FDA’s concern is that the unexpected release of any part of this battery-powered toothbrush during use poses a risk of injury,” says Steven Silverman, director of the Office of Compliance in FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “And the risk is higher in children or adults who may need assistance but are not supervised while using the toothbrush.” See Hazard Details tab for more information.

The company has assured Health Canada that they are monitoring, investigating and responding to consumers regarding reports of malfunctioning toothbrushes.
Advice to Parents, Caregivers and Consumers
Please remember to replace your brush head after 3 months of use, or if the brush is damaged, or if parts become loose. Extended usage, loose parts or excessive wear could lead to brush head breakage, generation of small parts and possible choking hazard. Inspect brush for loose parts before use.

Before using the Spinbrush, inspect it for any damage or loose brush bristles. If you find any, do not use the brush. Report it to Church & Dwight, which can be reached toll-free at 1-800-352-3384 or 1-800-561-0752.
Make sure the brush head is connected tightly to the brush handle, and test the brush outside of your mouth before using. If the connection feels loose or the brush head easily detaches from the handle, do not use the brush. Report it to Church & Dwight.
Use care not to bite down on the brush head while brushing.
To prevent injuries, always supervise children and adults who may need assistance when using the Spinbrush.
Follow the instructions and recommended replacement guidelines included with the Spinbrush.
Report injuries or problems with the Spinbrush to MedWatch - FDA's Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program either online, by regular mail, by fax or by phone.

    Seuss Birthday

Well, well, well... in case you haven't heard, with all the hype about The Lorax and all, today is Seuss's birthday! Yep, that masterful story-spinner was born on March 2, 1904, making this his 108th birthday :)

Last year, I posted some of my favorite Seuss quotes, and some celebration ideas for all the Seuss fanatics out there (click to view). This year, I found some ideas online and I wanted to share the links with you....

First up - this awesome Happy Birthday poem I found on just4teachers (it's really not you know ;-):
    source

Doesn't that put a smile on your face? Me too.

    source

Now that you're in the spirit, head over to foodyourway and check out their collection of Seuss recipes and activities... like these cute little marshmallow treats:

The crafty crow has a wonderful selection of ideas pulled together, like these little finger puppets for you & the kids to make (would make great pencil toppers too!):

Letkidscreate has a balancing activity and a Seuss creature craft for the younger little ones to get in on the fun. Check her out here.

And, now, we all know Seuss is amazing for little peeps learning to read, right? Well, this link is an every day treat: visit montessoritidbits for Dr. Seuss books listed by reading levels! I love this idea because, by giving your child a book to read at a level that meets his ability, you increase his confidence. This will instill a love of reading (especially when combined with the Seuss-master!) and as he moves along through the more difficult books, he'll become a more adept reader.... and have fun doing it!

    And above all, remember:
