What To Do This Weekend - Get in a Festive Easter Mood & Be Charitable

There are lots of fun, Easter-themed activities on the go this weekend, as well as at least two charitable events - take your pick :-)

Get into a Festive Easter mood:

• take the kids to an Easter Story-Time Session at Michael Donovan Library tomorrow (Friday) at 3:30 pm - sit back and watch the awe on their faces as they listen. Don't forget to borrow a book or two before you leave!
• Nothing beats a Spring Tea, Craft & Bake Sale! Visit the one at St. James United, 2-4 PM Saturday.
• On Sunday, head over to the Geo Centre for their Environmentally Friendly Easter Celebration, and participate in Origami Workshops, Face Painting, and make Recycled Paper Seeded Bookmarks. From 2-4PM. Also, for that afternoon (12 to 5PM) there will be free admission to the main exhibits!

Events in support of great causes:

• tonight, at 6:30, there is a Japan Fundraiser at the A.C. Hunter Library - contact information is in the calendar, or see post here for more details. 

• Saturday (April 16th), visit Reach Out for Rylee, an online Facebook auction in support of this little boy with a rare medical condition. Proceeds will go towards expenses related to his treatment in the U.S. There are many wonderful items up for bids: here's a sneak-peek:

Wow. I have an Anniversary coming up. A big one too: DH and I have been married 10 years! TEN years - you didn't think I was old enough did you? Well thank you, I appreciate the compliment. 

Ten years, though... and it has just flown by. And, to be sappy here... I love the guy more everyday! He is unbelievable...

He always felt like home...

...from day one, if not before.

I remember going out of my way to "run into" him in the hall.... gosh! the butterflies ;-)

And I still love to just be with him....

...to sink into him.

He is the strong, silent type, always there for me, no matter what struggles there are; supporting me, pulling me up, giving me strength....

... laughing with me, talking with me, just being with me...

And, when he has his arms around me...

...I know my soul - my being- is safe with him.

I am grateful for him...

Crazy, madly, passionately in love with him...

....and looking forward to the next 10 years ;-)

Upcoming Events This Week: Parent Free Night at Clay Cafe & Fundraiser for Japan

I wanted to quickly pass along information on two events happening mid-week - they are in the calendar, but I didn't want them to get overlooked:

Wednesday - Pizza and Pointillism Class at Clay Cafe
Drop your kids and run! This is a Parent-Free event where children will create a colourful painting using only dots, taught by local artist Sadie Jane. They'll even get pizza for supper while there! For children 7-12, from 6-8PM on Wednesday April 13th; cost is $25 (includes all materials and pizza, your 2 hours of free time is a bonus ;-) Call Clay Cafe to register -  745-2345

Thursday - Japan Fundraiser at the AC Hunter Library
This event to support the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami Victims will also allow you to learn about and experience some of the Japanese culture! There will be origami lessons, contests for Haiku poetry and Anime Drawing, Finger Foods and Door Prizes. Sounds like a fun event for the entire family - and proceeds will go to a great cause: the Japanese Red Cross via the Newfoundland Japanese Society. Thursday Night, 6:30 - 8:45PM. Tasty Tuesday - Brown Sugar Glazed Carrots

This is one of DH's recipes for baby carrots. We don't make it often (the kids eat carrots sans fanfare), but since the carrots are cooked with brown sugar and butter, when we do have it, it is a yummy and popular treat!

From: Southern Food

Easy Brown Sugar Glazed Carrots

Ingredients:
16 ounces baby carrots
2 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup water
dash salt
pepper, to taste

Preparation:

In a medium saucepan, combine the baby carrots with remaining ingredients. Stir to blend ingredients. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium and continue boiling (uncovered) for about 20 to 25 minutes, or until carrots are tender and the liquid has evaporated. Serves 4 to 6.

How the Kids can help: Measure & pour ingredients; older ones can help stir the pot. Don't be surprised if some carrots and/or sugar go missing - best have a few carrots extra at least ;-)

Marvelous Monday - Variations On A Theme

What a fabulous morning out there! And wasn't it a glorious weekend - the sun! the warmth! We enjoyed it to say the least :-)

I did get some time to start my Easter Stamping though, and so I have some cards to show you this week and next. I had two designs in mind (stay tuned next week for the second set), and really just played with the placing of the elements as you can see:

For obvious reasons, I've been thinking of these as my "Bunny Buns" series ;-)

The card-stock, ink, and Easter stamp are all Stampin' Up, however I am unsure of the origin of the bunny stamp. It was a gift from my Aunt a few weeks ago - she actually used it way-back-when on Mario's first birthday card, so it is very special :-).

Recall - Electrolux ICON® Smoothtop Cooktops (sold at Sears)

Event Highlights

Event Update - Sears Canada reports that it will perform a free diagnostic inspection of its customers' smooth-top or coil element electric range for any customer that contacts Sears experiencing similar issues to those indicated in the August 2009 and October 2010 safety notices but whose range model and serial number are not included in these previous recalls, to verify whether the range is functioning properly. Sears has set up a dedicated phone line (1-866-691-9948) to address this matter and assist our customers with their concerns.
Health Canada, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Frigidaire Canada, and Electrolux Home Products, Inc. report of a recall involving certain Electrolux ICON® smoothtop cooktops with rotary knobs and digital displays, and certain Frigidaire® and Kenmore Elite®  freestanding smoothtop electric ranges with rotary knobs and digital displays.

Liquids can pool under the control knob and cause the surface heating element to turn on unexpectedly, heat to temperatures other than expected and then not turn off, posing a risk of fire and burn hazards to consumers.

▲According to the US CPSC, Electrolux has received 70 reports of incidents, including three reports of fires that resulted in property damage. Three minor burn injuries were reported.

The Frigidaire/Kenmore affected units were sold across Canada from approximately June 2001 to September 2008. The Electrolux affected units were sold across Canada from approximately January 2005 to August 2010.

Corrective Action:
Electrolux - Consumers should immediately stop using affected units and power off the cooktops at the circuit breaker.  Contact the company for information on how to obtain a free repair kit.

Recall - Dora & Diego Pacifiers

Event Highlights

Health Canada reports of a recall involving Go, Diego, Go! and Dora the Explorer pacifiers for ages 3 to 6 months. The nipples and handles of the recalled pacifiers may separate; these small components pose a choking hazard to young children.

Small Changes Challenge - 13/50

OMG! Its Friday the Thirteenth!

Haha - Did you just check your calendar? 

No, you haven't gone cracked (and neither have I ;-)... it is Week #13 in the Small Changes Challenge!


This week, I wanted to tackle my drinking problem: I don't drink enough water ;-). Once upon a time, when I worked a desk job, it wasn't an issue: I would keep a litre-sized water bottle handy and fill it up at least twice a day. However, these last few years... it's another story. You would think that, since I am home and can head to the kitchen whenever the mood strikes me, that it would be easier to get a few good glasses of water down the ol' pipes, but I usually only manage one glass (16-oz) with supper.

Now, I do eat a lot of fruit, and am not too shabby on the veg, and I do drink tea (though rarely have juice, milk or pop), so I am getting water through other means....BUT.... I believe a good dose of actual water - clean, clear, refreshing water - does a body - and the skin it's in - good. So, I challenged myself to get 3-4 glasses (16 oz) a day.

....And... it is harder than it used to be! I haven't gotten 4 glasses/day yet, though I have managed 2-3 every day. That said, they aren't always spaced out as well as I would like - the first is often closer to lunch time than morning. I'd give myself a score of 3/5.. for the effort ;-)

On the plus side: at least I am building the habit.... Maybe in a week or two, getting 4 glasses/day will be old-hat :-)

And, speaking of that... I'm going to get me a glass right now :-) Cheers!

Reach Out For Rylee - Online Auction

Next weekend (April 16th), there is an online auction in aid of a little boy Rylee, with a very rare disorder: SAPHO syndrome. SAPHO is a chronic disorder that involves the skin, bone, and joints, and Rylee is the only diagnosed child in the province. He had been doing quite well over the last couple of years, however, he has now suffered a relapse, meaning he and his parents will have to travel to the US for further treatment.

So, several of the local WAHM's and business have joined together in this Reach out for Rylee auction project. All proceeds will go to to the family to aid in Rylee's treatment and the associated costs.

What To Do This Weekend - Get Ready For Spring; Indulge in Childhood Memories

Isn't it beautiful out there this morning - the sun is splitting the rocks! It is amazing how much of a beating the snow has taken this week - I can actually now see an inch of grass along side the driveway! It has me looking forward to the promise of Spring, and an adventure filled Easter Break with the boys, and hopefully a sunny weekend :-)

Here are some ideas to meld your Spring Preparations with some FUN:

• It is a little too early yet for me to poke around the property to get up the winter debris - most of it is still snow covered, but I do have Spring Cleaning on the brain, so I am going to go through our books again - including cookbooks - and make a point to drop them off at the Book Blitz on Saturday (A&C or Lester's Farms, Pearlgate Rd.) - proceeds go to fund scholarships at MUN & CNA. 
• I don't know about your kids, but mine are always eyeing the stuff in the recycling bin to see what they can take for crafts. Clay Cafe has a genius program Saturday morning: bring in a bag of recyclables and create a sea turtle from them! It is best suited to children ages 7-12 and you do need to register (Clay Cafe link is in the sidebar). 
• Last but not least on the "Spring Prep" front: why not head over to the garden section at your favourite store, pick out some seeds with the kids, and plant them inside, in a little container on the windowsill? Fun for children to tend to and to watch grow, and once the snow is cleared and the threat of frost is gone, you can have an afternoon in the dirt with your peeps planting the tiny plants! Veggies would be great - they can harvest them and eat 'em later in the season. Plant a favourite or two and one you'd like them to try ;-)
• Now that there is some order to the house, reward yourself! Indulge in a walk through the park, visit the Easter Bunny at the Village, OR, how about this: Willy Wonka is playing at Holy Heart Theatre - proceeds will aid in their refurbishment project. Many schools are taking their students, but, if yours didn't, don't miss out! Go see it Friday or Saturday night with the kids and relive those Charlie and the Chocolate Factory memories!

The Search (OR: A Reminder To Parents)

So, a while back, DH bought Toad the ski poles he wanted. Toad just loves to snowshoe, and poles seemed so cool....and snowshoeing is something they can do together, with or without the rest of us.

He didn't want Mario to feel left out, however, Mario is not quite so gung-ho on the snowshoeing. He spends his Daddy-n'-me time doing Lego's. They have made Atlantis together, and the Millennium Falcon. What he got Mario then, was a Star Wars Lego kit. He brought it home, and told Mario he thought they could do it together, but that he could exchange it if it wasn't one he wanted.

Did Mario want it - well, heck yeah, he wanted a Star Wars Lego kit, but not just any Star Wars Lego kit, oh no.

The one he'd love to have, he told his Dad, was the one with Jango Fett that was in some Walmart flyer we'd received. DH dutifully went off to the nearest Walmart...

It wasn't there - they had all the other ones from the flyer, of course, but not the one Mario wanted.

So DH went to the next Walmart... and the next. He covered them all.

He spent 2 weeks looking - even tried Toys R Us and Zellars.

Then, on Saturday, after another unsuccessful trip to Toys R Us, we told him that we would try online but maybe he would just have to accept that we had done our best and keep the original kit his Dad had brought home ...

... his little lip quivered. He was so disappointed. For some reason, this Lego set meant so much to him...

Driving home, we said we'd give the Kelsey Drive Walmart one more go.

And they had it! It was right there! On the shelf! Whoo-hoo! Hallelujah!

So, did he get it?

Ummmmm..... no. 

He "changed his mind" and bought the Atlantis one that was right next to it.

And - oh yeah - we had seen that one before.

And so, dear Reader, a reminder for us all of two very important lessons:

Recall - Infant Bed-Side Co-Sleepers

The following recall notice is from HSW:

Event Highlights

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports of a recall involving Infant Bed-Side Co-Sleepers by Arm's Reach Concepts Inc.  When the fabric liner is not used or is not securely attached, infants can fall from the raised mattress into the loose fabric at the bottom of the bed-side sleeper or can become entrapped between the edge of the mattress and the side of the sleeper, posing risks of suffocation.

CPSC and Arm's Reach have received 10 reports of infants falling from the raised mattress into the bottom of the sleeper or becoming entrapped between the edge of the mattress and the side of the bed-side sleeper.

Recalled sleepers were sold in the U.S. at Burlington Coat Factory, Babies R Us and other retail stores nationwide from September 1997 through December 2001 for about $160. The Arm's Reach Conceptswebpage lists several Canadian stores that carry Arm's Reach products.
Corrective Action:Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed-side sleepers and visitwww.armsreach.com/instructions to view and download assembly instructions and to make sure that the product is properly configured. Recall - 2 More Probiotic Supplements Identified as Containing Undeclared Milk/Soy

Event Highlights

Event Update - Health Canada reports of a recall involvingseveral probiotic natural health products because they are labelled as not containing dairy (milk) and/or soy but may contain trace amounts of milk or soy protein from ingredients used in the production process. The products are promoted as natural health products that contain live bacteria (probiotics) for therapeutic purposes. Two additional products that may contain trace amounts of milk have been added to this advisory.



The products are Saccharomyces Boulardii, Herbasaurs Bifidophilus for Kids, Acidophilus Bifidobacterium, Cultures de Yogourt 2 Milliards, Friendly Flora, and Healhty Skin with Greens+. See HSW Product Details tab for specifics on the affected items.

People with allergies to milk or soy can experience a range of mild to severe symptoms when exposed to even small amounts of milk or soy proteins. These symptoms may include breathing difficulties that, in some cases, can be life threatening. See Hazard Details tab for more information.

Health Canada will monitor the company recalls and work with the companies to ensure these products are appropriately labelled.

Recommended Actions:
Canadians with milk or soy allergies who have purchased or used any of the three products should,
•Speak to your healthcare practitioner with any questions or concerns regarding further use of these products.
•Report any adverse reaction potentially related to these products to Health Canada.

Tasty Tuesday - Chocolate-Strawberry Celebration Cake

We had dinner at my Aunt's recently and she made this awesome Chocolate-Strawberry Celebration Cake - OMG & To-Die-For!!!! All I can say is: thank goodness for the Internet, and simple, easy-to-navigate sites like the Taste of Home site - I was able to find it in no time! And believe me - you want need to try this cake....

Enjoy!

Chocolate-Strawberry Celebration Cake Recipe From Taste of Home

Ingredients:

1 package (18-1/4 ounces) chocolate cake mix

1 package (3.9 ounces) instant chocolate pudding mix
4 eggs
1 cup (8 ounces) sour cream
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup canola oil
4 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted


FROSTING:
2 cups butter, softened
4 cups confectioners' sugar
3/4 cup baking cocoa
1/2 cup 2% milk


GARNISHES: 
2 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted
1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled


GANACHE: 
4 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream 

Directions:

• Combine the first seven ingredients; beat on low speed for 30 seconds. Beat on medium for 2 minutes. Transfer to two greased and floured 9-in. round baking pans. 
• Bake at 350° for 28-32 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely. Beat the butter, confectioner's sugar and cocoa until blended; add milk and beat until smooth. Spread frosting between layers and over top and sides of cake. 
• Pipe or spoon melted chocolate onto waxed paper in decorative designs; let stand until set. Arrange strawberries on top of cake. For ganache, place chocolate in a small bowl. Heat cream just to a boil; pour over chocolate and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over top of cake, allowing ganache to drape down the sides. Top with chocolate garnishes. Yield: 12 servings.

PS: My Aunt had hers covered in strawberries all over - not just on top. Definitely added to the decadence! Make this when you have company - impressive, and it will reduce the possibility you'll eat the whole thing yourself!

Recall - "Troy the Activity Truck" by Infantino (choking hazard)

The following recall notice is from HSW:

Event Highlights

Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report of a recall involving "Troy the Activity Truck" by Infantino, a motorized brightly coloured plastic toy truck with flexible plastic tubing in orange and green. The plastic tubing can detach and release the small sliding shapes; these small parts pose a choking hazard to young children.

The US CPSC and Infantino have received 25 reported incidents of parts detaching. 15 of the reports indicated that a child had a detached shape in his/her mouth and 2 of these reported that the child was gagging.

Recalled products were sold in Canada at various retail stores from September 2009 to February 2011.

Corrective Action:
Consumers should immediately take the toy away from young children and contact Infantino for instructions on receiving a free replacement toy.

Recall - Bulk and Prepackaged Walnut Products (E. coli)

The following recall notice is from HSW:

Event Highlights

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Amira Enterprises Inc. are warning the public not to consume certain bulk and prepackaged raw shelled walnut products described here because these products may be contaminated with may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

All raw shelled walnuts sold from bulk bins, all package sizes and all lot codes / Best Before dates of the following raw shelled walnuts and products containing walnuts are affected by this alert. The affected products were available for purchase from January 1, 2011, up to and including April 4, 2011. See HSW Product Details tab for specifics on the affected items.
Brands include Amira, Tia, and Merit Selection. The brand name Amira may not be marked on the raw walnuts sold from the bulk bins. Consumers who have purchased walnuts from bulk bins are advised to contact the retailer to determine if they have the affected product.
 
These products have been distributed in Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and Ontario. However, they may have been distributed nationally.
This is an ongoing food safety investigation. ▲The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is investigating a multi-provincial outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in collaboration with provincial health authorities as well as federal health partners including the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada.

Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Amira Enterprises Inc., St. Laurent, QC is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace.  The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
