What To Do This Summer: July 15 - 31

Hello Everyone!

How is your summer thus far? Ours is moving along wonderfully - we have been enjoying the weather, going to the Splash Pad at the Park, lazing at Topsail Beach, having water gun fights, playing street hockey and sleeping under the stars!

Here is the Short & Sweet list of events and activities around town for the second half of July. You can find full details in the calendar (at the bottom of every page on the blog or find it here). There are lots of fun things on the go this month -  AAMP has a series of kid and family friendly events several times a week at Admiralty House; Shakespeare By The Sea is performing at the St. John's Farmers Market and at the Mt. Pearl library in addition to their regular venues; Mt. Pearl City Days are celebrating 25 years with several activities including an outdoor showing of Wreck it Ralph and a classic car show ...and ... the Teddy Bear Picnic is coming up! And MUCH more besides!

P**P Happens!

That was an interesting little fiasco with the Eastern School District this AM, yes?

For those of you who don't know, early this AM the board sent out an email to radio stations/principals cancelling classes after the morning session. Their website was also down for many in the metro area at this time. Then, around 7:30, they sent a second email to the media indicating the first email was sent in error and that all schools were open all day. By this time, parents had sent their kids back to bed or sent them to school without lunch, or had received the automated emails and phone calls from the individual schools regarding the supposed school closure at noon. And, calling the schools was difficult, most schools don't have administrative or phone staff in until at least 8:15.

You can imagine the confusion of all us parents! And of the media! And even the principals I imagine!

....And the dismay and disappointment of the poor kids! Mine did not believe me when I told them they had to make lunches after all - school was open all day: "You're kidding right?.... I know you are. ... I know you're joking."

Oh, well. It will be interesting to see what comes of it today. Already this AM, folks were taking their frustrations out on the 99.1 Hits FM Facebook page. I think that was misplaced - the media postings (and even the automated principals' messages) were based on faulty information they received from the proper source - they were doing their best to help everyone out by passing along the updates they had received in good faith. What sort of state would we be in if they did not respond to the information they received? Think about it - the ESDNL site would definitely be crashed (as it often is on snow days), we wouldn't get emails from school or updates on the radio... we would all actually have to take it upon ourselves to call the schools and the school board, then get frustrated and upset that we couldn't get through and that there was no one there to take our calls!

The onus for this issue this AM does lie solely with ESDNL. They need to investigate the cause and offer an apology with a plan to avoid this in the future if possible. I am sure some employee there is having a VERY rough day - either from a human error and the subsequent fallout OR from a technical/system error and the subsequent fall out. We don't know the cause yet and so we should try to offer the same understanding we would want if we were in their situation.

Is it confusing? Hell yeah. Frustrating to get all the conflicting reports? Oh yes. Hectic when you have to scatter last minute to whip up a lunch you thought you didn't have to make? Yep. A pain in the hoo-ha to have to undo all the "snow-day" arrangements you made for childcare? Yes. But, hey, sh*t happens and 99% of the time it works, so I'm just gonna roll my eyes and roll with the punches ;-)

What to do This Weekend - Enjoy the SnOw (You really don't have a choice - there is so much of it ;-)

Well that storm was disappointing... I mean, really, we didn't get hardly any snow ;-) 

Seriously, I hope everyone is safe, dry and warm, and enjoying some hot chocolate by the fire!

After you get shovelled out this weekend, or before, depending on priorities ;-), why not built a snowman, a snow fort or have a snowball fight - you & the husband against the kids ;-). Or head to Victoria Park, Bowring Park or Pippy Park and enjoy some sledding! Woot! Woot! Winter is here!!!!

What To Do This Weekend - a Walk Through Bowring Park to see the Lights, then Grab a movie at the GEO Centre!

Well Folks, at first glance, it would appear that it is a bit of a slow weekend  - I guess everyone figured we would still all be deep in our turkey comas ;-) But, if you know where to look, there are lots of fun family things to do!

IMHO, your ideal family weekend would include one or more of the following:

• The Kids' Program at the Fluvarium (this month's theme is Life Goes On. Children will learn that there are still lots of animals active and awake all winter long. They are encouraged to bring a clean milk carton or food-grade plastic bottle to aid their exploration with the group!)....  
• A walk through Bowring Park at night to see the Christmas Lights before they are gone for the Season! ....
• A trip to the movies would also be a fun way to finish Christmas.... go see Rise of the Guardians if you haven't already! 
• And/or, a visit to the GEO Centre to explore some history, and take in The Gruffalo's Child in their 3D theatre while you are there - my 8 yr old LOVED it!

What To Do This Holiday Break - Visit the Basilica, Celebrate Christmas with Wonderbolt and go to a New Year's Eve Skating Party!

Well folks, here is the sort & sweet list of events in the calendar between now and Old Christmas Day on January 6th. What To Do this Weekend....Welcome Santa and Visit Exotic Animals!

Another packed weekend! The Arts & Culture Centre is having their Christmas Craft Fair, Weecycle is hosting another Kids Yard Sale at the Kilbride community Centre, and several Churches are having their variety sales and fairs! If fairs aren't your thing, you can still do some holiday shopping and help a local charity by shopping at Chapters between 3-8 on Sunday evening. Mention Heavenly Creatures at the checkout and a portion of your purchase will be donated to the animal welfare group.

Plus, of course, there is the Kids Program at the Fluvarium (Sat & Sun at 1:30). I haven't dropped by for this one yet, but I am curious - it is all about Fish Nests! And, at The Rooms, kids can learn about Family Crests and even make their own at the Family Fun Event: My Family and Me (Sun 2-4).

.... But, let me tell you right now: the MOST EXCITING FUN for your kids this weekend will be at the mall! Why?? SANTA IS COMING! Both the Avalon Mall and the Village Shopping Centre are welcoming the Jolly Man in Red this Saturday... Santa will be at the Avalon Mall 9AM, before beating it over to the Village for 9:30 AM (must be that lightening fast sled!).

Terry Rielly (The Teddy Bear Man) and CJ Moose will also be at the Village for a sing-a-long and will have a treat for the first 150 children (9:30 Saturday)

At the Avalon Mall, there is also a treat for the kids (9AM Saturday), AND there is a special showing of the movie Arthur's Christmas at 11 AM (admission is a non-perishable food item) to get everyone in the Christmas Spirit!

AND THAT IS NOT ALL! There are more special guests in St. John's this weekend: Little Ray's Reptile Zoo is back! They will have all sorts of exciting animals, from venomous snakes to an Eurasian Lynx with them at the St. John's Convention Centre Saturday and Sunday 9-5.

Now, you will very likely be beat out after that busy weekend, but, there will be no rest for the weary this week: on Monday evening, the Happy Tree is being launched at the Avalon mall and there is a special parent & teen information session on Teen Mental Health at St. Peter's Junior High on Munden Dr. at 6:30; Tuesday evening there is a Make a Mug class at Clay Cafe Avalon; and Wednesday brings the tree decorating at the A&C and a pajama party at Mt. Pearl Public Library! Thankfully though, you will have a couple of days to recover for next weekends events (heads up: Santa Parade on the 25th! and it's Christmas at Commissariat House all weekend long!!)

What to Do This Weekend - Fairs, Plays, New Family Fun ... and even a visit with Santa!

Well, Folks: Two things

1. It is the weekend of the Fall Fair... and...
2. Christmas events have officially started for the Season!

Oh yeah, you read that last part right...This weekend marks the Colony of Avalon's Christmas Open House (Saturday and Sunday)! There will be plenty to see in their gift shop and 17th century replica kitchen and I have to say, methinks there will be a trip to Ferryland for me in the next couple of days ;) But that is not all for Christmas, no sirree: Santa is scheduled to make an early-bird appearance at the SPCA Fall Fair this Saturday at 1PM! Children are welcome to bring their letters if they already have them done.

As for Fall Fairs, well, the SPCA isn't the only one - on Saturday there are the following events planned in and around the city: St. James United Church Sale & Morning Coffee; St. John the Evangelist Flea Market; St. Mark's Church Fall Fair; St. Peter's Parish Fall Fair; and the True Crafter's Fair...and on Sunday, there is the International Food and Craft Fair at the Holiday Inn. Details on all these events can be found in the calendar.

We are into a new month (nah... ya don't say?) and that brings a change in the theme of the Fluvarium Kid's Program - Fish Nests! Children will learn all about how trout prepare their nests and lay their eggs... and they may even see a female do just that in the underground viewing area! Saturdays and Sunday at 1:30.

Botanical Garden Family fun program continues and this is also the last weekend, I believe, for their Edible Garden. If it is decent out, it is always well worth a stroll.

Also, don't forget: Pony rides for kids ($5) every weekend at Clovelly Stables Family Sundays!



The theme for The Rooms Family Fun Program this weekend is Fun with Flags, children will learn why and how  flags were so important in days gone by and will make their own special family flag! Sunday 2-4 PM. The Rooms also has a family-friendly play on Sunday as part of the Storytelling Festival: Nutty Neighbours and Gluttonous Guests... pop over and make an afternoon of it!

What To Do this Weekend - Explore Doors Open, Take a Walk; Ride a Horse

Well, folks, here we are: about to begin the first weekend of the school year (even after only two days, I have to say: Woot! woot! It's the weekend!). I'm guessing we will all want to make the most of it...so.... here's what's on in the City:

• First of all, I have to mention that Doors Open is this weekend! This is a fabulous opportunity to get a peek into some of the City's greatest landmarks and best kept secrets. This year's participants include The Commissariat House; Central Fire Station; and the Railway Coastal Museum, among others. For more details and specific times, visit www.doorsopendays.com. 

• MUN Botanical Garden's Edible Plant Walk is also this weekend (Sunday actually). I LOVE these - fun and educational for the whole family! Pre-registration is required, so be sure to call at least 24 hours in advance!

• The Kraken is a family event hosted by Breakwater Books and The Geo Centre. It will be at the Geo Centre on Saturday (visit them as part of Doors Open as well!). 

• Solid Rock Wesleyan Church is having a Family Fun Day on Saturday that is open to the public, 2-6 PM. Events include a bouncy castle, face painting, old fashioned carnival attractions, and a bbq.

• Targa NL launches this weekend! Check out the participating cars Saturday 2-10PM or Sunday 5-9 PM at the Targa/Autism Car Show (Remax Centre) or head to The Keg at 12:20 on Sunday for the Ceremonial Flag Drop and Start time. • The usual suspects: The Fluvarium's Kids' Program for September is Dabblers and Divers (1:30 Saturdays and Sundays); St. John's Kid/Hava Java Playdates continue; and I just recently learned about Clovelly Stables Family Sundays, where you can pop in between 2-4 on Sunday afternoons and ride one of their horses for only $5 - what a great idea for a Fall afternoon!

What to do this Weekend - Memorial Day, Canada Day and More!

The RDF has not been fun the last day or two, but we are promised sun and warmer weather for the weekend - yay! Here's what's on:

• now through Sunday, Thomas Amusements is at the Paradise Community Centre
• Saturday - get a head start on your Canada Day celebrations at Salmonier Nature Park! they will be celebrating both Saturday and Sunday afternoons with cake, scavenger hunt and a Teddy Bear Picnic with Terry O'Reilly!

To recap your high school history class, on July 1, 1916, 801 Newfoundland soldiers fought against the enemy at the Battle of the Somme... the next day, only 68 answered roll call. Long before we joined Confederation then, July 1 was Newfoundland's day to remember our soldiers and honour their memory. You can continue the tradition at one of the following:

• St. Johns - services start at Field of Honor ( Mt. Pleasant Cemetery) @ 9:15, before continuing at  Branch #01 Memorial on Blackmarsh Rd, then to  Sergeant's Memorial on Queen's Rd. at 10:50 the Memorial Parade will move off for National War Memorial via Queen's Rd, East Duckworth St, Cochrarne St and West on Water St.
• Mt. Pearl - The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36, Memorial Day Parade begins 10:30am and travels down Park Avenue (beginning at the intersection of O’Keefe Avenue) to the War Memorial at the Park Place Community Centre for a ceremony beginning 11:00am.
• Botanical Garden - MUN Botanical Garden will be giving away forget-me-not cards and bookmarks to all our visitors on July 1.  (Traditionally in Newfoundland, a small bunch of real, or paper forget-me-nots was worn on July first, or Commemoration Day. This beautiful little flower was selected because of its name, and also because it flowers on or around July first.)
• Town of Torbay - Memorial Service at Veteran's Memorail, torbay Rd, 11 AM

CANADA DAY - Our National Party! We begin bright and early here with the Sunrise Ceremony on Signal Hill (shuttles start at 4AM, service is at 6AM) and festivities continue throughout the day.... here are some events to try to take in:

• St. John's: Confederation Celebration at Confederation Hill starts at 12. There will be a Kids Karnival with facepainting, games of chance, tattoos, balloon sculptures and bouncy castles. Subway will be on hand creating their 26 foot subway sandwich, Build a Sub game, scavenger hunt, product giveaways and more! Plus, there will be performances by several local artists. Cake at 1PM.
• Mt. Pearl - Join the party at St. David’s Park from 12-3 for lots of entertainment provided by Magician Mark Bailey, Jugglers, Hot Hoops Hula Hoopers, Live Music by Glen Harvey & Barry Kenny, Games & Inflatables,Facepainting and of course, cake & a BBQ! And BONUS: There will be a most outrageously dressed person contest for those wearing red and white. Admission is a non-perishable food item. 
• MUN Botanical Garden - enjoy Canada Day Celebrations at the Botanical Garden 10 - 4, including a variety of crafts, stories, games, activities, duck-feeding, nature hikes and prizes will be provided throughout the day.... plus create a one-of-a-kind Canada Day butterfly, follow the Maple leaf trail, and find the hidden butterflies in the flower gardens. Go on a Canada Day scavenger hunt. Refreshments, including a birthday cake, will be provided. 
• Town of Torbay - join the Town of Torbay at the Jack Byrne Arena, 12 noon - 3PM for a bouncy house, Mark Webber magic, face painting, Cowan Heights Jump Its performance and treats, including snow cones, cotton candy and cake!
• Town of CBS - from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm on Sunday, The Town of Conception Bay South will be having their annual Canada Day Celebrations at the CBS Recreation Complex (pool).  There will be a ceremonial rising of the flag, cake cutting, musical entertainment and lots of fun activities.
• Also on: There is a Canada Day Kid Connection Carnival from 1 pm – 4 pm on the grounds at Eastern Gate Church and it is Day 2 of the Salmonier Nature PArk's Canada Day festivities (1-5). There will be a family-friendly Jubilee Jubilation Concert featuring Dungarvan at Quidi Vidi at 8:30. 
• Bowring Park is having a Canada Day Celebration that includes activities for the whole family and a BBQ, so feel free to bring a lawn chair and join us for an afternoon in the park. 2:30-7PM fors cheduled activities.
• Pippy Park's Canada Day Festivities will occur from 2:00pm - 4:00pm. They will have a bouncy castle, bike rodeo, refreshments and other games and prizes. 
• FIREWORKS - St. John's Fireworks 10PM Canada Day at Quidi Vidi. Town of Torbay Fireworks July 2 at 10PM at Torbay Beach.
